Port of Limburg strengthens its position as a logistics hotspot in the Euregio

The inland terminal Port of Limburg (POL) is positioning itself as a leading player in the logistics sector. POL is located on the Albert Canal in Genk, at the heart of the Euregio, and close to the German border. With multimodal connections via the E313 and E314 highways and the Albert Canal, POL serves as a satellite location outside the congested seaports. This strategic location makes POL the logistics hotspot of the region, ideal for companies striving for efficient and reliable transport solutions.

Ambitious growth plans and capacity expansion

POL specializes in container transport and has ambitious growth plans. In the next five years, a tripling of volume is expected, reaching a total capacity of 350,000 TEU per year. The final construction work is currently being completed, including the installation of two cranes and site finishing. The terminal will be operational by early 2025.

State-of-the-art terminal and advanced Value-Added Services

POL’s new terminal will be state-of-the-art, with the highest security standards and maximum efficiency. It will be equipped according to guidelines for handling hazardous and temperature-controlled goods, as well as GDP standards. In addition to traditional terminal activities such as loading and unloading containers, POL will offer advanced Value-Added Services (VAS), including stuffing and stripping containers, maintenance, repairs, cleaning, degassing, and gas measurements, as well as customs-related services. In the next phase, POL plans to add isotank storage and filling activities.

Sustainability as a core value

POL places a high priority on sustainability. The terminal will operate on green energy and will focus on promoting a modal shift from road transport to inland waterways. This will contribute to reducing traffic congestion and emissions of harmful substances. This commitment to sustainability aligns with POL’s broader goals of stimulating economic growth in Limburg, attracting private investments, and creating jobs in the region.

Collaboration with strong shareholders for sustainable growth

The expertise of POL’s shareholders further strengthens the terminal’s position in the logistics chain. The collaboration between the local strengths of Group Machiels and H.Essers and the global logistics knowledge of Medlog ensures that POL stands out as a reference point for multimodal transport and sustainable logistics within the Euregio. The recent entry of Medlog adds value with their extensive knowledge of container logistics and connectivity to seaports, without compromising POL’s independence. POL will remain under the expert leadership of CEO Benjamin Hermans. Thanks to the collaboration between these three strong shareholders and POL’s unique position in the logistics sector, POL is ready to set a new standard in multimodal transport and sustainable logistics solutions in the Euregio.
