Port of Limburg will become a multimodal terminal on the Albert Canal in Genk. The new inland port will be built on the site of the former Ford factory. Port of Limburg will provide water transport from Limburg to and from the ports of Antwerp and Rotterdam. Thanks to its good connection to the road network and the train terminals in Genk, the infrastructure network of Flanders and the province of Limburg in particular will be strengthened in a multimodal way. The focus here is on the shift from road freight transport to inland waterway freight transport.
The construction of the inland port contributes to the future-proofing, sustainability and efficiency of the transport sector in Limburg. The establishment of Port of Limburg will play an important role in realising a substantial modal shift to inland shipping. This not only provides an answer to the ever-increasing problem of traffic congestion, but also leads to a significant reduction in the emission of harmful substances.
This project offers leverage for private investments, will contribute to sustainable economic growth and an increase in direct and indirect employment in the region.
For the realization of the necessary infrastructure, transhipment facilities and equipment for this project, the initiators have provided a total investment budget of approximately 40 million euros. The project is partly made possible by European support. 1.5 million euros will be subsidized by ERDF.
